Shopping Trip: Shirley Shivhon Rugs Brighten Your Floor for Summer, and Seasons to Come
It's kind of an oxymoron to ask for a traditionally-weaved rug that's also on the modern side but Shirley Shivhon, the mastermind behind SHIVHON carpets, has been offering up just that since 2005. Her handsome wool and silk rugs ($85 per square foot), available at Andonian Rugs in the Seattle Design Center (5701 Sixth Ave. S, Suite 392, Seattle; 206.762.0323) are contemporary motifs handcrafted on a traditional loom in Nepal. Her most recent adventurous patterns, Cloverfield and Hapuu, are taken from the natural designs of tropical plants and ferns in her garden just outside of her Santa Monica window. "Sometimes, we don't have to go very far for inspiration...we just need to have some space in our minds to allow it in," she says. I whole-heartedly agree, Shirley.
