Shopping Trip: Lost and Found Hans Wegner Chair at Design Within Reach

Printer-friendly version

Fifty years after its original design, Hans J. Wegner's Oculus chair ($5,265) finally gets a name and makes a show-stopping debut at Design Within Reach (1918 First Ave., Seattle; 206.443.9900). After uncovering photos of an early prototype and a clay model of the chair, the Denmark manufacturer Carl Hansen & Son decided to produce the long lost piece. The chair lightly curves around a solid oak body filled with down and foam, has pronounced armrests to relax on, and sits gracefully on thin stainless steel legs. Available in seven different shades, you can go for a downplayed beige or periwinkle, or make it stand out with crimson or, my favorite, butter. Mmm mmm. It's a revived mid-century classic brought back to life for our modern lifestyles.
