Gilded Glamour

I love the glitz and grandeur of the Gilded Age, that turn-of-the-century dream world when new American wealth created opulent interiors worthy of any European palace. Step into the Northern Lights ballroom at The Arctic Club Hotel (Downtown, 700 Third Ave.; 206.340.0340; domeroomseattle.com), a remarkable circa-1916 property that was originally a private club for locals who’d made their fortunes in the Alaska Gold Rush, and you’ll feel magically transported to the black-tie brilliance of a bygone era. The crown jewel of the hotel is the ballroom, nicknamed the Dome Room because of its luminous leaded-glass ceiling.
Formal furnishings, flashes of silver and gold, and sparkling tableware add a touch of turn-of-the-century romance to any setting. Start with a few Belle Époque-style basics, such as Jonathan Charles’ Giltwood Console Table and Theodore Alexander’s Dancing Through the Night Armchair from Masins (Bellevue, 10708 Main St.; 425.450.9999; masins.com). Vaughan’s handsome Brass and Leather Étagère and Black Bouillotte Lamp from England are fitting formal additions from The Dixon Group (Georgetown, Seattle Design Center, 5701 Sixth Ave. S, Suite 162; 206.767.4454; thedixongroup.net). Next, add authentic antique accents, such as a neoclassical Marble-Top Table, a gorgeous circa-1900 French Mahogany and Gilt Brass Clock and a pair of whimsical Gilt-Bronze and Crystal Prism Candlesticks decorated with fairy figures, all selected from Singer Galleries’ (Queen Anne, 411 W Galer St.; 206.285.0394; singergalleries.com) stock of fabulous finds. Kusak Cut Glass’ signature 1919 Jasmine-patterned Ice Bucket and Candelabra bring sparkle and sophistication to any ensemble (Rainier Valley, 1911 22nd Ave. S; 206.324.2931; kusak.com).
Finally, designer Timothy De Clue’s new store, Le’ Objects for the Home (Georgetown, 1226 S Bailey St.; 206.604.4958; leobjects.com), is brimming with shimmering silver trays, goblets and decanters to help complete the luxe look.
So, whether you’re planning a fancy New Year’s fête or just looking to add some pizazz to your pad this winter, go formal with touches of grand, Gilded-Age style.
